The Vancouver-based marvel-in-the-making is fearless in her lyricism\, confronting anti-Indigenous racism and colonial violence alongside other hard subjects like anxiety\, grief and heartache. To the great tradition of singer-songwriters healing through their music\, Nimkish brings a bright-eyed aim to flourish in all she has experienced. Stylistically\, Nimkish exists in a realm between Kehlani and King Princess\, softly orbiting Sabrina Claudio. \nHer lyrics give affirmation to past pain while living in the moment. To some it may sound like escapism\, to others it may sound like moxie-driven R&B-pop pulsing through the club. What’s certain is her fortitude — she’s an it-girl on a mission\, combining the coolness and creativity of the TikTok generation with the lucidity and confidence of a grown ass woman. \nAbout Cordie M. Utilizing repetition\, drones\, and low frequencies generated with vintage analog electronics and processed in Ableton Live\, Gold seeks to evoke new sensations and altered brain states. Through a disabled/queer/non-binary lens\, their practice encompasses immersive live performances\, conceptual audio-visual experiences\, and community gatherings\, fostering a rich dialogue around sound and perception.\n \n\n \nAbout x/o\nx/o is Veron Xio (they/them); a Vietnamese-Canadian electronic music producer and multidisciplinary artist based in Vancouver. Interested in disrupting gender binaries and transgressing codes of identity\, x/o uses hyper-masculine and hyper-feminine sonic tropes to build new worlds; an audiovisual exploration of duality and cyclical emotions. \nThey have presented work internationally\, including Phoenix Central Park (Sydney)\, Palais de Tokyo (Paris)\, Institute of Contemporary Arts (London)\, La Casa Encendida (Madrid)\, and House of Electronic Arts (Basel). Most lyrics are in Tsimka’s heritage language Tia-o qui-aht ƛaʔuukwiʔatḥ.ḥ Her themes deal with love\, cleansing\, healing\, liberation through imagining and more. Michael creates and reveals music & atmospheres with the natural sounds recorded by Tsimka from her ƛaʔuukwiʔatḥ home territory\, and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh territory (where she lived recently for 2 years). \nBreaking ice as light percussive rhythym\, bull kelp head explosions becoming kick drum patterns\, a Squamish valley wolf\, a large cat in the dark.. Cixwatsac (Frank Island frogs)\, Swainson’s Thrush\, other birds. a little creek at Hiłwinʔis\, ocean\, rain and mist. Tsimka’s voice is also used as an instrument through live fx and is embedded in Michael’s pre-made production (which is dubbed out and layered and effected live). Willms (Honorary Life Vice President) and Jeff Alexander (former VSO President and CEO) in 2003\, the VSO School of Music was created to provide a modern educational institution next to the Orpheum Theatre\, where students of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds could enjoy lifelong learning and the majority of instructors would be members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Macdonald Development Corporation was approached by the VSO to buy the Capital 6 movie theatre that formerly occupied the site\, with the intention of building a music school: the concept\, including a residential tower above\, was immediately embraced by the company. Wall Financial Corporation later took over the lead role in the project\, and oversaw the construction of the school and residential tower designed by Bingham Hill Architects. The songs within pulse with movement: salmon fighting upstream\, crows banking against dusky skies\, ancestors descending from stars\, and communities coming together. This Chinook shorthand also flowed between Stʼatʼimc hands in the 1800s\, a code of connection that barely survived. \nI still hear my mother’s voice in the melody of “Gathering”—how she would hum it first\, barely audible\, in the residential school’s shadowed corners. Girls would gather around bodies huddled close\, as she taught them to shape their mouths around Stʼatʼimc syllables the teachers had forbidden. They memorized each word\, each inflection\, passing it between them like a secret flame that mustn’t die. Years later\, when I record this song\, I feel her breath in mine—the same defiant air that kept our language burning when they tried to extinguish it. Vancouver rose from this coastal soil nourished by the intertwined roots of many peoples. He is also a passionate mental health advocate living with Bipolar Type 1 Disorder\, whose journey telling his story through music was the subject of an award-winning documentary “The Lion”. His upcoming album Home\, Grown releases this summer 2026. \nLouie Sanchez\nLouie Sanchez (they/them) is the solo project of Eirene Cloma\, a Toronto-based musician originally from North Vancouver\, BC. They are a member of nationally acclaimed kulintang ensemble Pantayo whose debut album was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize in 2020. They are also a session musician who has worked with artists such as Kimmortal\, Rae Spoon\, and Austra. Louie Sanchez is a return to their roots as a singer-songwriter trained in classical and jazz guitar with soul\, r&b\, folk\, and country influences. \n…and introducing rising youth artist: Leigh Kathryn\n19 year-old Leigh Kathryn crafts heartfelt original music that utilizes the genres of R&B and Pop to flow with the storytelling of Folk and the energy of Indie. DESCRIPTION:Concert Program		\n			\n	\n\n\n \n\nAnvil Theatre & Vancouver Independent Music Centre presents \nGoodbye\, Strawberry Hill\nSaturday\, May 2\, 2026 | 7:30pm \nA concert celebrating the launch of Sharon Minemoto’s new album\, Goodbye\, Strawberry Hill (Cellar Music). This album tells her family’s stories\, joyful and sad\, from WWII to present day. \nFollowing the bombing of Pearl Harbour in December 1941\, the Canadian government interned people of Japanese ancestry due to fears of espionage\, widespread anti-Japanese racism\, and pressure from British Columbian politicians. Japanese Canadians were stripped of their civil rights and nearly 22\,000 people were forced to leave their homes\, many of whom were moved to internment camps. In 1942\, Sharon Minemoto’s mother’s family’s 10-acre strawberry farm in Strawberry Hill\, (Surrey-Delta) was confiscated by the government and her family then interned in Slocan\, BC. \nEven after the end of the war\, Japanese Canadians were forbidden to return to the West Coast. They were given two choices: move east of the Rockies or “Repatriate” to Japan. Sharon’s maternal grandparents made the difficult choice to take four of their six Canadian-born children by boat to Japan. As Canadians\, they would face years of hardship and discrimination in Japan before choosing to return to Canada. \nSharon’s father’s mother took her children to meet their grandmother in Japan when the war broke out. Without a home\, income or father\, the family was stranded near Hiroshima when the US atomic bomb was dropped. With his family stuck in Japan\, her grandfather was interned in a camp in Moose Jaw\, where he died. \nWith the support of the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society\, Sharon composed nine works for her quartet\, each inspired by and reflecting her family’s experience during WWII. Raagaverse has long been inspired by the depth\, warmth\, and cinematic possibilities that\nstrings bring\, expanding the palette of its music while deepening the dialogue between Hindustani classical\ntraditions\, jazz harmony\, and improvisation.\nThe inspiration for this project began with Naina featured on Raagaverse’s debut album Jaya\, where Western\ncinematic strings composition combined with Hindustani melodic language and jazz quartet textures to reveal\na compelling new direction for the ensemble. That experience showed how naturally these musical worlds\ncould come together and sparked the vision for a full-length strings project. \nThe program will feature newly imagined arrangements of some of the defining works from Jaya\, alongside\nbrand-new compositions that will be part of an upcoming second release. DESCRIPTION:Vancouver Independent Music Centre Society (VIM) presents: \nMIESHA AND THE SPANKS  \nwith Francis Baptiste  \nThursday\, November 5\, 2026\n8 pm\, doors at 7 pm\nFox Cabaret\n2321 Main Street\, Vancouver \nThis Concert takes place on the traditional and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples. \nAbout the show  \nPoetic\, leather-jacked and wicked\, the Calgary-based garage rock duo\, Miesha and the Spanks will grace the\nstage of the Fox Cabaret along with Vancouver singer-songwriter Francis Baptiste on Thursday\, November 5\,\nbrought together by VIM curator\, programmer\, musician and community organizer Rob Thomson (Haida). \nAbout Miesha And The Spanks \nSinger/guitarist and beloved fixture on the vast global musical landscape\, front-woman Miesha Louie is the\ndriving force behind Miesha and The Spanks\, supported by her psychic counterpart\, percussionist\,\naccomplished singer/ songwriter Sean Hamilton — intuitively punctuating her soulful choruses with a pounding\nintensity that elevates heart rates and ceiling rafters.\nA mixed-Secwépemc artist living in Treaty 7 Territory\, Miesha is devoted to inventing and playing instrumentally\nbrilliant melodies that unleash her passions and full-throated vocal tones. With a serious dose of spirit and\ncharisma\, Miesha makes every song resonate with her own jagged signature. \nTheir latest album “Unconditional Love In Hi-Fi” was released on Mint Records\,\nand took them across Canada and into the US\, UK\, Germany\, Sweden\, and Poland.\nPerfectly frank\, Miesha and the Spanks don’t shy away from\nthe darkness. With a dark sense of humour and a serious howl\, nothing is beyond their grasp. \n\nhttps://mieshaandthespanks.net/ \nAbout Francis Baptiste \nDescribed by CBC as “unsparingly candid” and “lushly hypnotic”\, Syilx songwriter\, Francis Baptiste covers\ntopics of cultural reclamation\, addiction\, and fatherhood. In 2022 he released his debut album\, Sneqsilx\n(Family) [Snek-silx]\, an album that features songs sung in his native language Nsyilxcən [ne-see-ilk-chen]\, the\nendangered language of the Syilx [see-ilks] people. The 10-song album was his effort to preserve and connect\nwith his heritage. In 2024\, Baptiste released his second album\, Senklip\, the Trickster. How do performers change as we age? What becomes more\nimportant\, what is less important? Sujit\, Mark and Parmela explore the physical and sonic shifts time brings.\nFragile: Handle with Care is the first draft presentation of a new collaborative work featuring new movement and music\nby three of Vancouver’s leading creative artists\, composer/ flutist Mark Takeshi McGregor; composer/ violinist Parmela\nAttariwala; and choreographer/ dancer Sujit Vaidya. \nAbout Mark Takeshi McGregor  \nDescribed as a “mind-blowing” musician of “huge physical energy” (Times Colonist)\, flutist Mark Takeshi McGregor is a\nVancouver-based soloist\, chamber musician\, and improvisor. Mark has performed with various ensemble across five\ncontinents including Innovations en Concert (Montreal)\, Ding Yi Chinese Chamber Music Festival (Singapore)\, Museo\nLeonora Carrington (San Luis Potosí\, Mexico)\, Melos-Ethos (Bratislava)\, GroundSwell (Winnipeg) and Núcleo Música\nNova International Symposium of New Music (Curitiba\, Brazil). In 2021\, he was honoured with the Friends of Canadian\nMusic Award\, which recognizes exceptional to Canadian composers and their music. He is artistic director of the Queer\nArts Festival + SUM gallery\, major platforms for 2SLGBTQIA+ art and artists. \n \nhttps://marktakeshimcgregor.com/\n  \nAbout Parmela Attariwala  \nBorn and raised in Mohkinstis (Calgary)\, Parmela Attariwala determined as a toddler that she had to play the violin after\nseeing one on television. She studied music formally in the United States and Europe\, then cultivated an eclectic artistic\npractice over a twenty-five-year sojourn in Toronto\, mixing traditional and non-traditional\, cross-genre and\ninterdisciplinary\, performance and creation\, socially progressive pedagogy and applied ethnomusicology. Parmela is\nparticularly known for working with choreographers (as both composer and movement artist)\, for her Attar Project\nrecordings featuring works for Western strings and North Indian tabla (“a cross-cultural handshake to set the mind\nspinning”)\, and for research on music and identity in Canada. Since moving to Vancouver in 2019\, Parmela’s creative\nwork has expanded to include sound scores for gallery installations (Esker Foundation\, Peter Morin and Ayumi\nGoto’s the Salmon and the Crow are Everywhere and Morin’s NDN Lovesongs)\, dance film (Sujit Vaidya and Robert\nKingsbury’s Sacred/Sacrilegeous)\, and opera (Marion Newman and Yvette Nolan’s Namwayut). She also co-founded the\ncollaborative improvisation web series Understorysound.ca\, and dedicates her spare time to tackling issues of equity\nand ethics in the music sector.  \n \nhttps://parmela.com/ \nAbout Sujit Vaidya  \nChoreographer Sujit Vaidya is an independent Vancouver dance artist trained in Bharatanatyam who works primarily as\nsoloist. His artistic choices reflect the curiosities and experiences he holds as a queer artist of colour\, while deeply\nengaging with an art form rooted in tradition. His choreographies question the narrative and relevance of non-inclusive\ntraditional texts. He aims to create space for queer expression within the context of Bharatanatyam. His works have\nbeen programmed in festivals such as Vancouver International Dance Festival\, Dancing On The Edge and MAI Montreal. \n \nhttps://sujitvaidya.ca/ \nAbout SUM Gallery \nOne of only a handful of permanent spaces worldwide dedicated to the presentation of queer art\, SUM gallery brings\ndiverse communities together to support artistic risk-taking\, incite creative collaboration and experimentation\, and\ncelebrate the rich heritage of queer artists and art. SUM produces\, presents and exhibits challenging\, thought-provoking\nmultidisciplinary art\, including up to six exhibitions a year\, a concert series\, the SUM-AiR artist residency program\, and\nmultiple workshops and public engagement initiatives.
