At Ledbetter’s hands\, the piano roars\, whispers\, cries\, and laughs\, telling stories as only he can\, evoking cinematic images in the listeners’ minds. \nThe Jeremy Ledbetter Trio’s second album\, “Gravity”\, sees Jeremy joined by Grammy-winning drummer Larnell Lewis (Snarky Puppy) and renowned electric bassist Rich Brown (Steve Coleman’s Five Elements)\, who offer the perfect counterpart to Ledbetter’s iconoclastic energy at the piano.“Gravity” has taken the jazz world by storm\, racking up a Juno Award (Canada’s top music prize) for Jazz Album of the Year\, the title “Best in Canadian Jazz” from Jazz FM91\, and over half a million streams worldwide. Raagaverse retains the authenticity of both traditions\, melding them seamlessly into one cohesive sound that is both dynamic and explosive with immense respect\, depth and beauty. \nShruti’s musical fluency originates from her rigorous Hindustani training and degree under Dr. Ritu Johri in Mumbai\, India\, and her studies leading to a degree in Jazz from Capilano University. Her original compositions use melodies ornamented with traditional Hindustani nuances\, with underlying modern Jazz harmonies and rhythms. \nJodi brings her musical mastery on the bass as well as her insight and experience performing\, recording\, touring and promoting her music. Willms (Honorary Life Vice President) and Jeff Alexander (former VSO President and CEO) in 2003\, the VSO School of Music was created to provide a modern educational institution next to the Orpheum Theatre\, where students of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds could enjoy lifelong learning and the majority of instructors would be members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Macdonald Development Corporation was approached by the VSO to buy the Capital 6 movie theatre that formerly occupied the site\, with the intention of building a music school: the concept\, including a residential tower above\, was immediately embraced by the company. Wall Financial Corporation later took over the lead role in the project\, and oversaw the construction of the school and residential tower designed by Bingham Hill Architects. Made possible through the City of Vancouver’s Cultural Amenity Bonus Program\, the residents of British Columbia now have a state-of-the-art community music school\, serving students from 3 months old to senior citizens\, catering to all ability levels from beginners to aspiring professionals. \nThe School’s Artistic Advisor is Maestro Otto Tausk\, Music Director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. https://vsoschoolofmusic.ca/about/ \nShare this:FacebookTwitterPocket

SUMMARY:Music At The Cinemas - Nimkish & Cordie M. Sad
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver Independent Music Centre Society (VIM) Presents: \nMUSIC AT THE CINEMAS: NIMKISH & CORDIE M. SAD \nCurated by Rob Thomson \nThis event is hosted on the unceded and traditional lands of the Coast Salish peoples – sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, selíʔlwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. \nThursday\, May 22nd\, 2025\nShow: 8:00 pm\nDoors: 7:30 pm \nVenue: Fox Cabaret – 2321 Main St\, Vancouver \nTickets: General Admission (Sliding Scale) – $15 to $25\nPWYC (Pay what you can) tickets may be available at the door if the show has not sold out. Please reach out to info@vimhouse.ca if you would like to attend but are facing financial barriers. \nAbout Nimkish: \n \nTo fully immerse in the multitudes of Indigenous rising star Nimkish is to honour the past\, look ahead to the future\, and bask in the resplendent present all at once. The Vancouver-based marvel-in-the-making is fearless in her lyricism\, confronting anti-Indigenous racism and colonial violence alongside other hard subjects like anxiety\, grief and heartache. To the great tradition of singer-songwriters healing through their music\, Nimkish brings a bright-eyed aim to flourish in all she has experienced. Stylistically\, Nimkish exists in a realm between Kehlani and King Princess\, softly orbiting Sabrina Claudio. \nHer lyrics give affirmation to past pain while living in the moment. To some it may sound like escapism\, to others it may sound like moxie-driven R&B-pop pulsing through the club. What’s certain is her fortitude — she’s an it-girl on a mission\, combining the coolness and creativity of the TikTok generation with the lucidity and confidence of a grown ass woman. \nAbout Cordie M. Sad: \n \nCordie M. Sad is an art rock project based in Vancouver\, BC\, led by vocalist Cordelia Donovan. Blending haunting melodies with vivid storytelling\, the music transforms raw emotion into immersive sonic landscapes. With influences ranging widely from pop to prog to punk\, each song is a journey through beauty\, pain\, and the spaces in between. \nKnown for its dynamic arrangements and unfiltered intensity\, Cordie M. Sad crafts music that lingers long after the final note. Whether through intricate instrumentation or stark vulnerability\, the project invites listeners into a world where connection and catharsis soothe our heartaches\, offering both reflection and release. \n___________________________________ \nVenue Accessibility: General admission tickets are standing room only with limited\, first-come-first serve bar seating along the back of the room. SUMMARY:Drumming Up Spirit - Tzo'kam and Sawagi Taiko
DESCRIPTION:*** SOLD OUT ***\nSaturday\, May 12th\, 2024\nShow: 2:00 PM\nDoors: 1:00 PM\nVenue: Annex \nGet ready to experience an electrifying evening of drumming and rhythm at the Annex in Vancouver\, BC\, Canada. Join us for an unforgettable in-person event showcasing the incredible talents of Sawagi Taiko and Tzo’kam. \nThis event features two groups of multi-generational Indigenous and East Asian artists\, drawn together by their passion and dedication to traditional music in contemporary times\, a community focus\, and the power of these shared experiences. Bringing Sawagi Taiko and Tzo’kam back together for one exhilarating performance\, Drumming up Spirit isn’t one to miss. \n \nPower\, Passion\, and Rhythm. Canada’s first all-women Taiko group. Founded in 1990\, Sawagi Taiko is a multi-generational group of women of East Asian and Indigenous ancestry\, brought together by our shared passion for the Japanese drum. With thunderous drum beats\, stirring vocals\, and martial-arts inspired choreography\, we share the empowerment and exhilaration we feel through taiko with our diverse audiences. We harness the power of the drum to support feminist and social justice ideals. \n \nTzo’kam\, meaning “chickadee” and “visitors are coming” in the Stl’atl’imx language\, brings to life the songs its founder\, the late Flora Wallace learned as a child in Xaxlip (near Lillooet). The traditional songs have been kept alive by her son Russell Wallace along with members of his family and community. Tzo’kam wishes to share the teachings and traditions passed on by the elders with all communities. \nFeel the energy and spirit as the thunderous beats fill the air\, captivating your senses. Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind performance that will leave you inspired and uplifted. Mark your calendars and join us for Drumming Up Spirit featuring Sawagi Taiko and Tzo’kam! \nThis event is produced by the VIM with support from City of Vancouver – Cultural Services\, Canadian Heritage\, JTC Heersink Family Foundation\, Vancouver Civic Theatres and the Powell Street Festival Society. \nShare this:FacebookTwitterPocket

A self-taught guitarist born in Vancouver\, BC with Ethiopian and Eritrean heritage\, her songwriting is inspired by her personal experiences and guided by the ethereal moments love and relationships have to offer. After a summer in Nashville\, Rahael wants to bring the music she creates propelled by the traditions of country\, Americana\, and folk music to wider audiences. \n \nSUGARFUNGUS\nVancouver\, Canada based\, Sugarfungus’ music can best be described as HighClouds blog puts it: “Dancy dream pop for the haunted and heartbroken.” The band released their first EP entitled “Letting Go\, Moving Still” on January 26\, 2022. The EP presents a set of warm and fuzzy tracks that blend bright guitar lines and atmospheric synths\, all the while punctuated by pop-driven hooks that capture the feeling of drifting in and out of a state of sweet\, mushroomy bliss. For a band inspired by science\, nature\, and art\, the idea of stitching pieces of different organisms together to evolve into something infinitely funkier\, more brilliantly alive is an apt metaphor. The band is now focused on self producing their first full length album. SUGARFUNGUS is Tess Meckling\, Alex Marr\, Jackson Moore\, and Bradan DeCicco. \n \nAbout The Series – UNDER THE ATRIUM \nDiscover your new favourite troubadour. \n3 evenings. 6 artists. SUMMARY:Under The Atrium: Savannah Read & Madelyn Read
DESCRIPTION:UNDER THE ATRIUM: SAVANNAH READ & MADELYN READ\nFRIDAY\, OCTOBER 20th\, 2023 \nVenue: KW PRODUCTION STUDIO – Woodwards Building – #10 – 111 Hastings St W\, Vancouver\, BC V6B 1H4\nDoors: 7:30 PM\nShow: 8:00 PM \nALL AGES / DRY EVENT (Non-Alcoholic Beverages + Mocktails Offered) \nSliding Scale Ticket Pricing + PWYC At The Door\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/721694747417?aff=oddtdtcreator \nSavannah Read \nSavannah Read is a jazz and RnB-inspired singer-songwriter from Vancouver\, BC who aims to break the boundaries of genre. Her latest self-produced single\, “Swim & Drive”\, does just that\, capturing the unexpected happiness\, shared moments\, and occasional doubts that arise when summer feels too good to be true. This release follows her single “Outerspace” from May 2023 and her 2021 debut EP\, Honey\, There’s a Lot of Trouble!. Savannah’s music pulls influence from artists like Eloise\, Dodie\, Rex Orange County\, and Charlie Burg\, creating a unique blend of alternative indie-pop. \nOver the past five years\, Savannah has been a frequent solo and accompanied performer at shows around Vancouver and Victoria\, BC. Notable performances include a self-organized\, cross-Canada tour with singer-songwriter duo\, Arbutus\, in 2019\, placing first at the University of Victoria Battle of the Bands in March of this year\, and performing at Foodstock Festival in June 2023 alongside Said the Whale\, and Fake Shark. \n \nMadelyn Read \nThough she may have spent her whole life in the city of Vancouver BC\, Madelyn’s heart is in the rural tales of Folk/Americana music. This duality of urban and country is ever present in her music\, as she pulls inspiration from Folk/Americana groups like I’m with Her\, Joni Mitchell\, and First Aid Kit and blends these sounds with lyrics about growing up in an urban centre. \nHer debut album\, Concrete Country (released May 19\, 2023)\, represents a modern Canadiana that asks\, “What does it mean to live in a North American city in the 21st century?” Madelyn’s nostalgic and haunting songs feel like a lonesome train ride through the prairies that brings you straight into a bustling downtown core. An ode to home that is full of love and frustration\, Concrete Country is a striking\, thought-provoking\, and heart-warming collection for the urban lover of folk. \n \nAbout The Series – UNDER THE ATRIUM \nDiscover your new favourite troubadour. \n3 evenings. 6 artists. DESCRIPTION:UNDER THE ATRIUM: RAHAEL & SUGARFUNGUS\nFRIDAY\, SEPTEMBER 15th\, 2023\n\nKW PRODUCTION STUDIO\nWoodwards Building – #10 – 111 Hastings St W\, Vancouver\, BC V6B 1H4 \nDoors: 7:30 PM \nShow: 8:00 PM \nALL AGES / DRY EVENT \nSliding Scale Ticket Pricing + PWYC At The Door \nTICKETS:\nhttps://vim-undertheatrium-sept15.eventbrite.ca \nRahael\n\nRahael creates an immersive and cinematic world that celebrates the intimacy of love. 6 artists. A Giving Way is the sixth studio album by the Peggy Lee Band and was recorded in July 2022. \nThe compositions come from a place of gratitude and love for family\, place and community as well as a desire to do better collectively towards justice\, honour and human dignity. The ensemble playing is beautifully polished and warm and the members of the band improvise with great creativity\, passion and clarity. \n\nBrad Turner\, trumpet\nJon Bentley\, tenor saxophone\nJeremy Berkman\, trombone\nRon Samworth\, guitar\nTony Wilson\, guitar\nAndré Lachance\, bass\nDylan van der Schyff\, drums\n\nAbout The Peggy Lee Band \nThis group was largely inspired by Peggy’s experiences working in the bands of guitarists Ron Samworth (Talking Pictures) and Tony Wilson (the Tony Wilson Sextet). \nBy 1998\, Peggy felt ready to try her hand at composing for a band of her own\, wanting to bring together some of her favorite players who\, at the time\, hadn’t played a lot with each other. \nOriginally a sextet (trumpet\, trombone\, cello\, electric guitar\, electric bass and drums) the band was expanded in 2007 with the addition of tenor saxophone and a second electric guitar. \nFrom the start\, the main objective was to explore different strategies for improvisation within composition and to feature the unique and brilliant individual voices that make up the band. Over the years\, with five records released\, the individual voices remain vivid and compelling but the overall ensemble sound has also developed into its own rich entity. \nJulia Ulehla\nDrawing on various threads of Ulehla’s musical background (opera\, oratorio\, cabaret\, musical theatre\, folk traditions\, pop\, experimental\, and new music)\, this performance will explore song as a medium for storytelling across a wide terrain of musical genres. Drawing on composers like Henry Purcell\, Kurt Weill\, Peggy Lee\, Bob Dylan\, PJ Harvey\, Roy Orbison\, Ulehla and Bajakian bring together songs that might not be paired in other contexts. \n\nJulia Ulehla\, vocals\nAram Bajakian\, guitars\n\nAbout Julia Ulehla \nJulia Ulehla is an interarts performer\, improviser\, and scholar who lives and creates on the traditional\, ancestral\, unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people. Her performance practice\, research\, and writing explore song as a living being. Since 2013\, Julia has been vocalist and bandleader of the avant-folklore ensemble Dálava\, with whom she regularly performs throughout North America and Europe. Julia holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of British Columbia\, an MMus in Vocal Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music\, and a BA in Music from Stanford University. Julia performed as a lyric mezzo-soprano in opera and oratorio from 2002-08\, and from 2008-11 she was a member of the renowned laboratory theatre the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards in Pontedera\, Italy. She is currently a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow in Cultural Studies at Queens University. Her research-creation project explores the “extra-rational” possibilities of the voice\, extending the theoretical account of living song into ethical praxis\, and developing methods for voice\, movement\, text\, image\, theatre\, and installation in a community of collaborative artists. \n\nShare this:FacebookTwitterPocket

Incorporating elements of free improvisation and jazz\, this trio works in seamless synergy to bring powerful heat to one’s ears. Not a band to miss! \nA budding artist on the West Coast\, Kidane is a multi-instrumentalist\, musical electronicist\, composer\, and arranger based out of Musqueam/Squamish/Tsleil-Waututh territory. Inspired by the art of Blackness\, her practice revolves around decolonization\, spirituality\, and the complexities of human experience. \nLonghand Trio\nSaxophonist Peder Long was a little-known but extremely prolific composer who wrote hundreds of unreleased songs. In the mid-1980s\, he mentored the now-iconic West Coast guitarist Tony Wilson\, who also played in Long’s band. Decades later\, Tony’s Longhand Trio has recorded a full album of Peder’s music which they’ll present alongside special guest violinists Jesse Zubot (Tanya Tagaq) and Josh Zubot (Land of Kush). \nThe Zubots are remarkable talents who match traditional mastery of their instruments with wide-screen\, cinematic use of electronics and extended techniques. With JUNO Award winners Russell Sholberg bass and Kenton Loewen drums\, Longhand’s lyrical interpretations of Peder Long’s music border on the spiritual. \n\nShare this:FacebookTwitterPocket
