Travis Laplante’s genre-defying tenor saxophone quartet makes its Canadian debut at the Emerald on Thursday, October 30, 2014. Battle Trance is Travis Laplante, Matthew Nelson, Jeremy Viner, and Patrick Breiner. The group is in the midst of a North American tour in support of their debut full-length release Palace of Wind, a piece that not only transcends genres, but also transcends time and space. The band, the album and the tour have been garnering rave reviews, and we’re excited to kick off our New Curation Series with a performance from Battle Trance.
“There’s tremendous technical control behind what [Travis] Laplante does… splintering notes as if through a prism, using circular breathing for purposes of hypnotism.” – The New York Times
“If you’re already acquainted with Evan Parker, John Butcher, Colin Stetson, and Mats Gustafsson, you’ll want to put Travis Laplante’s name on your list of must-see saxophonists.” – Georgia Straight
The evening will start with a solo bass set from Tommy Babin. Bassist and composer Tommy Babin has recorded and performed worldwide with a wide and varying array of artists. Dedicated to pushing his own limits on his instrument, he divides his time between Vancouver and San Diego where he is a graduate student under Mark Dresser at the University of California, San Diego.
The vision for VIM House is to showcase the incredible diversity and wealth of music in Vancouver, as well as to host performers from around the world; to create a place where musicians and artists from different genres and cultures will meet one another, exchange ideas and experiences and develop new musical collaborations.
The New Curation Series will provide the first exciting glimpse at one of the many facets of the future artistic vision for VIM House. Curated by Cole Schmidt (NoSchMo) in cooperation with Rainbow Robert (Coastal Jazz), this important curatorial collaboration combines the forces of a community presenter whose work has made a massive contribution to the ecology of jazz presentation in Vancouver, and a member of an established not-for-profit presenting organization committed to serving both the local and international creative music communities.
Genuine, respectful collaboration between artists, curators and presenters will be one of the key strategies for creating a unique and dynamic environment at VIM House, a place where music and community will thrive.
