What's Your Music?
with Sara Kim

Sara Kim

A short introduction...
I am a singer and a composer living and performing in Vancouver, B.C. My work is mainly with the two groups that I have been involved with since 2016: The Watermill Project (my brainchild of combining traditional Korean music & Jazz) and Omianan (we play alternative-jazzy-originals, I think!)

Where’s your head at these days?
Honestly speaking, aging. My day job is at a non-profit organization and I work with a lot of seniors.  Also, I think a lot about hearing. Not only as in hearing with my ears, but like how to really listen and connect with people, personally (and musically too).

What are you spending time on these days?
I've been spending a lot of my time taking walks and looking at the sunset around 8-9PM, trying to enjoy the last bit of summer when it's not too hot!

What/who are you listening to these days?
I've been listening to a lot of K-pop which is interesting because I never really listened to them before.

What/who are your biggest inspirations?
It's always been nature.

Do you have a quote on music or arts (or one by a musician or artist) that you love and inspired by?
This one by Ella Fitzgerald: "The only thing better than singing is more singing." It gives me such joy!

What is one live performance that you cannot forget?
I saw Nancy King performing with Randy Porter in Portland, Oregon for the Portland Jazz Festival back in 2018. As soon as she opened her mouth to sing, I cried. There was so much depth in her voice and I thought her voice depicted life itself.

Where/how can we follow you and/ or your work/ music?
