About Klatwa – Embark:

“I trace my finger over the album cover—curved lines and angles forming the word ‘Klatwa – to embark,’ the same marks my great-grandfather’s pen once made when writing to villages across the mountains. The songs within pulse with movement: salmon fighting upstream, crows banking against dusky skies, ancestors descending from stars, and communities coming together. This Chinook shorthand also flowed between Stʼatʼimc hands in the 1800s, a code of connection that barely survived.

I still hear my mother’s voice in the melody of “Gathering”—how she would hum it first, barely audible, in the residential school’s shadowed corners. Girls would gather around bodies huddled close, as she taught them to shape their mouths around Stʼatʼimc syllables the teachers had forbidden. They memorized each word, each inflection, passing it between them like a secret flame that mustn’t die. Years later, when I record this song, I feel her breath in mine—the same defiant air that kept our language burning when they tried to extinguish it. Vancouver rose from this coastal soil nourished by the intertwined roots of many peoples. Saltchuck City Orchestra honours this convergence—each note a declaration of defiance, each harmony an offering to those who found strength in unity, and each rhythm pulsing forward, inviting us all to dance.”

– Russell Wallace

Klatwa was co-produced by Russell Wallace and John Korsrud with the generous support of the First Peoples’ Cultural Council and the British Columbia Arts Council.

Saltchuck City Orchestra’s Klatwa Album Release Concert takes place on the traditional and unceded territory of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh).

About the Ray and Flora Wallace Bursary:

The Ray and Flora Wallace Bursary at Vancouver Community College (VCC), established by musician and composer Russell Wallace, commemorates the legacy of his late parents through the provision of financial assistance to Indigenous students pursuing musical studies at VCC.

The Bursary was established by Wallace to commemorate the legacy of his late parents through the provision of financial assistance to Indigenous students pursuing musical studies at VCC.

Ray and Flora Wallace transformed their modest East Vancouver house into a sanctuary of support for education, music, and community. Throughout the 1980s, they quietly covered textbook costs, tuition fees, and bus tickets for Urban Indigenous students struggling to make ends meet. Their kitchen table, scratched from years of use, became a gathering place where hungry students found homemade bannock and strong tea, sympathetic ears and generous hearts.

Jeremy Ledbetter Trio (2025 Juno Award Winner for Jazz Album of the Year)

Forged in a cauldron of raging, inspiring contemporary jazz, the Jeremy Ledbetter Trio pushes the boundaries of jazz and world music, providing an undiluted display of rampaging energy and captivating musicianship. Audiences must exercise caution. People who see this band are rarely the same again. If the Jeremy Ledbetter Trio were an inanimate object, it would be a runaway train.

Canadian pianist Jeremy Ledbetter is a fiery, passionate performer whose music knows no boundaries. His compositions are wildly creative and deeply emotional. At Ledbetter’s hands, the piano roars, whispers, cries, and laughs, telling stories as only he can, evoking cinematic images in the listeners’ minds.

The Jeremy Ledbetter Trio’s second album, “Gravity”, sees Jeremy joined by Grammy-winning drummer Larnell Lewis (Snarky Puppy) and renowned electric bassist Rich Brown (Steve Coleman’s Five Elements), who offer the perfect counterpart to Ledbetter’s iconoclastic energy at the piano.“Gravity” has taken the jazz world by storm, racking up a Juno Award (Canada’s top music prize) for Jazz Album of the Year, the title “Best in Canadian Jazz” from Jazz FM91, and over half a million streams worldwide. For this concert, the gifted and versatile bassist Andrew Stewart replaces Brown.

Raagaverse

2025 Juno Nominee for Best Jazz Album of the Year (Group), Raagaverse, led by Shruti Ramani (voice) with Jodi Proznick (bass), Noah Franche-Nolan (piano) and Nicholas Bracewell (drums), is a creative Indo-Jazz fusion band that pays homage to the two deeply historical and culturally-significant genres: classical Hindustani music and Jazz.

Bandleader Shruti Ramani brings her expertise in Hindustani music together with the quartet’s appreciation, knowledge, affinity and experience of the Jazz and other musical artforms. Raagaverse retains the authenticity of both traditions, melding them seamlessly into one cohesive sound that is both dynamic and explosive with immense respect, depth and beauty.

Shruti’s musical fluency originates from her rigorous Hindustani training and degree under Dr. Ritu Johri in Mumbai, India, and her studies leading to a degree in Jazz from Capilano University. Her original compositions use melodies ornamented with traditional Hindustani nuances, with underlying modern Jazz harmonies and rhythms.

Jodi brings her musical mastery on the bass as well as her insight and experience performing, recording, touring and promoting her music. She is also a highly respected music educator.

Noah is a stellar composer, pianist and keyboard player well known for his cross-disciplinary collaborations in jazz and classical idioms and for blending different musical styles.

Nicholas is talented young drummer who immediately connected with the music and musicians of Raagaverse.

The group’s first performance was on a double bill with the Itamar Erez Quartet at the Fox Cabaret in March 2022 as part of the VIM Music at the Cinemas Series. Since then, it has been invited to perform for the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Kay Meek Arts Centre, Lulu Performing Arts on Gabriola Island, VIFF, Publik Secrets, the Gordon Smith Gallery Music Series, the Fort Langley Jazz Festival, ArtSpring Theatre (Saltspring), King Eddy as part of JazzAhead Calgary, the Jazz at the Bolt series, High Beam Dreams in Gibsons, Muzewest and ACT Arts in Maple Ridge.

Expect energetic and enthralling music from Raagaverse!

About Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music (VSO):

Envisioned by Bramwell Tovey (Music Director Emeritus), Arthur H. Willms (Honorary Life Vice President) and Jeff Alexander (former VSO President and CEO) in 2003, the VSO School of Music was created to provide a modern educational institution next to the Orpheum Theatre, where students of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds could enjoy lifelong learning and the majority of instructors would be members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Macdonald Development Corporation was approached by the VSO to buy the Capital 6 movie theatre that formerly occupied the site, with the intention of building a music school: the concept, including a residential tower above, was immediately embraced by the company. Wall Financial Corporation later took over the lead role in the project, and oversaw the construction of the school and residential tower designed by Bingham Hill Architects. Made possible through the City of Vancouver’s Cultural Amenity Bonus Program, the residents of British Columbia now have a state-of-the-art community music school, serving students from 3 months old to senior citizens, catering to all ability levels from beginners to aspiring professionals.

The School’s Artistic Advisor is Maestro Otto Tausk, Music Director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. https://vsoschoolofmusic.ca/about/

About Tsimka & Michael Red

Tsimka & Michael Red is a collaboration of music from the land and from the heart (and knowing and listening).

Tsimka sings and speaks and sometimes plays a drum. Most lyrics are in Tsimka’s heritage language Tia-o qui-aht ƛaʔuukwiʔatḥ.ḥ Her themes deal with love, cleansing, healing, liberation through imagining and more. Michael creates and reveals music & atmospheres with the natural sounds recorded by Tsimka from her ƛaʔuukwiʔatḥ home territory, and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh territory (where she lived recently for 2 years).

Breaking ice as light percussive rhythym, bull kelp head explosions becoming kick drum patterns, a Squamish valley wolf, a large cat in the dark.. Cixwatsac (Frank Island frogs), Swainson’s Thrush, other birds. a little creek at Hiłwinʔis, ocean, rain and mist. Tsimka’s voice is also used as an instrument through live fx and is embedded in Michael’s pre-made production (which is dubbed out and layered and effected live). Words and tones and expressions are shaped and woven into all layers of the sonic fabric, from deeply embedded to very visible.

Tsimka: vocals, drum, live vocal processing
Michael Red: live dubbing of pre-recorded stems, live & spontaneous vocal processing and looping, other layers of sound & live manipulation

About Nimkish:

To fully immerse in the multitudes of Indigenous rising star Nimkish is to honour the past, look ahead to the future, and bask in the resplendent present all at once. The Vancouver-based marvel-in-the-making is fearless in her lyricism, confronting anti-Indigenous racism and colonial violence alongside other hard subjects like anxiety, grief and heartache. To the great tradition of singer-songwriters healing through their music, Nimkish brings a bright-eyed aim to flourish in all she has experienced. Stylistically, Nimkish exists in a realm between Kehlani and King Princess, softly orbiting Sabrina Claudio.

Her lyrics give affirmation to past pain while living in the moment. To some it may sound like escapism, to others it may sound like moxie-driven R&B-pop pulsing through the club. What’s certain is her fortitude — she’s an it-girl on a mission, combining the coolness and creativity of the TikTok generation with the lucidity and confidence of a grown ass woman.

About Cordie M. Sad:

Cordie M. Sad is an art rock project based in Vancouver, BC, led by vocalist Cordelia Donovan. Blending haunting melodies with vivid storytelling, the music transforms raw emotion into immersive sonic landscapes. With influences ranging widely from pop to prog to punk, each song is a journey through beauty, pain, and the spaces in between.

Known for its dynamic arrangements and unfiltered intensity, Cordie M. Sad crafts music that lingers long after the final note. Whether through intricate instrumentation or stark vulnerability, the project invites listeners into a world where connection and catharsis soothe our heartaches, offering both reflection and release.

Vancouver Independent Music Centre Society (VIM) invites you to an evening with Palestinian Canadian pianist, composer, and electronic artist John Kameel Farah at The Annex in Vancouver, BC, on Saturday, October 19th, 2024.

Farah’s performance will include his unique compositions for piano, synthesizers, and electronics, alongside interpretations of Renaissance master William Byrd and electronic renditions of J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier.

John Kameel Farah describes his art as creating “holistic experiences that fuse the elegance of Baroque and Early Music with the rich textures of Arabic Music, Improvisation, and Electronic Music.”

“I interlace piano loops with sequenced drum machines and intricate electronic arrangements, connected by spontaneous improvisations. I sometimes refer to my music as ‘Baroque-Mid-Eastern-Cyberpunk.’”

About John Kameel Farah:
John Kameel Farah is a Palestinian-Canadian composer and pianist whose music embraces aspects of Baroque and Early Music, Middle-Eastern Music, Improvisation and Electronic Music. He studied at the University of Toronto, where he received the Glenn Gould Composition Award twice. He continued studies with Terry Riley in California, and at the Arabic Music Retreat in Hartford.

Farah combines the piano with electronics, moving freely between intuitive improvisations and meticulously structured compositions. His project “Music for Organ & Synthesizers” treats the organ as the first, ancient synthesizer, which he presents in churches and cathedrals across Europe.

In 2023 he was awarded the Johanna Metcalf Award for the Performing Arts in Ontario, and was a guest-performer with Tangerine Dream in Toronto. Earlier this year, he performed his own works at the Berlin Philharmonic.

John has performed across Europe and North America, as well as South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, and Palestine, giving master-classes at the Edward Said National Conservatory in Ramallah in 2003. He is currently doing a residency with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, writing a piano concerto to be premiered in 2025. www.johnfarah.com

Drumming Up Spirit – Tzo’kam & Sawagi Taiko

*** SOLD OUT ***
Saturday, May 12th, 2024
Show: 2:00 PM
Doors: 1:00 PM
Venue: Annex

Get ready to experience an electrifying evening of drumming and rhythm at the Annex in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Join us for an unforgettable in-person event showcasing the incredible talents of Sawagi Taiko and Tzo’kam.

This event features two groups of multi-generational Indigenous and East Asian artists, drawn together by their passion and dedication to traditional music in contemporary times, a community focus, and the power of these shared experiences. Bringing Sawagi Taiko and Tzo’kam back together for one exhilarating performance, Drumming up Spirit isn’t one to miss.

Power, Passion, and Rhythm. Canada’s first all-women Taiko group. Founded in 1990, Sawagi Taiko is a multi-generational group of women of East Asian and Indigenous ancestry, brought together by our shared passion for the Japanese drum. With thunderous drum beats, stirring vocals, and martial-arts inspired choreography, we share the empowerment and exhilaration we feel through taiko with our diverse audiences. We harness the power of the drum to support feminist and social justice ideals.

Tzo’kam, meaning “chickadee” and “visitors are coming” in the Stl’atl’imx language, brings to life the songs its founder, the late Flora Wallace learned as a child in Xaxlip (near Lillooet).
